This story may sound like fiction, but it belongs to my life and to the lives of two or three generations of Cubans who grew up trapped on an island frozen by the stubbornness of a few. For years I believed that existence was normal; only after leaving Cuba did I understand that I had lived among risks, scarcity, propaganda, and situations so absurd that, seen from a distance, they resemble scenes from a dark comedy.
I write these memoirs to bear witness to a simple truth: freedom is not a slogan, but the most valuable thing a person can possess.
I grew up on an island of socialist surrealism, where fear and a lack of information were mistaken for normal life. I will change some names and places because there are still people who fear reprisals, and because this story, although personal, touches wounds that remain open.
In this book, you will find illustrations I created to complement the narrative, alongside personal photographs—I always carried my camera—and images of Havana I took before leaving my beautiful, captive island, which are part of my five international photo exhibitions.
